Green Procurement Code awards

On 26 October 2009 over 180 delegates joined us at the Royal Institute of British Architects to celebrate achievements in green purchasing. Welcome speeches were given by Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes and Daniel Silverstone, Chief Executive of London Remade, before Gareth Davies of the Audit Commission gave the evening's keynote speech. Signatories divert enough waste to fill 8 Royal Albert Halls

The results of the 2009 Mayor of London’s Green Procurement Code awards reveal that, despite the difficult economic climate, organisations in the capital are continuing to put sustainability at the top of their agenda.

The combined purchases of London organisations signed up to the Green Procurement Code diverted 118,641 tonnes of waste from landfill - enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall 8 times over. This represents a saving of 56,220 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of flying from London to Sydney over 14,000 times. The results also indicate that green procurement can benefit the economy as well as the environment. Signatories purchased from over 680 suppliers, supporting an estimated 831 jobs. The total amount spent on sustainable procurement was in excess of £436 million - up by 42.5% against the previous year.

Richard Barnes, Deputy Mayor of London who spoke at the awards ceremony said: ‘I am delighted to be able to celebrate the achievements of all the organisations signed up to the Mayor’s Green Procurement Code. Not only are they reducing their impact on the environment but they are saving themselves money at the same time.’

3rd International Conference of Green Purchasing

The Ex-Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, was the main attraction at the 3rd International Green Purchasing Conference in Suwon, Korea, in October. Following the two previous conferences, in Sendai, Japan in 2004 and in Barcelona, Spain in 2006, this conference welcomed 1,500 participants from 30 countries around the world. It provided an opportunity to interact and exchange information on Green Purchasing with leading experts from central governments, local authorities, international institutions and NGOs around the world.

At the climax of the conference, the Suwon declaration called upon “all stakeholders around the world ... to cooperate more closely and commit locally as well as internationally to put in place strong policies, strategies and regulations in support of green purchasing.” Green Procurement Code Programme Manager Graham Randles gave a presentation at the event on the achievements of the Green Procurement Code.

Energy saving measures could save UK businesses £6.4billion

Businesses could save more than £6.4billion by taking simple energy saving measures, the Government has announced. The figure was announced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as part of its new ‘Saving money – it's your business' campaign.

Research by WRAP shows that 47% of businesses recognise they could make savings of over £100k through low and no cost efficiency measures – such as turning off equipment when it's not being used – with 17% identifying over £1m of potential savings. These measures could contribute towards 10% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for 2020 with little or no outlay from businesses.

The London Borough of Lewisham was awarded the Green End User Award for negotiating a free-of-charge contract for the recycle of all its redundant ICT equipment. Lewisham was also Highly Commended in the ‘Policy, strategy and communication' category at this year's Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code awards.

EMS Easy

The Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code has teamed up with Global Action Plan to deliver an ‘Understanding EMS' seminar. This free seminar will enable you to find out what an Environmental Management System (EMS) is, what standards are available ( such as ISO 14001), the resources needed, the costs and the potential benefits through reduced resource use, increased productivity and access to public sector and corporate markets. It will also introduce ‘EMS Easy' - a quicker and easier way to help your organisation get accredited.

EMS Easy is a smart, informal and lean way of implementing an EMS. The idea behind EMS Easy is to simplify the process of certification by replacing a paper-based approach to managing environmental performance, with something more visual and intuitive, taking as its starting-point ‘what is happening on the ground'. Clients using this process are realising reduced implementation costs through less staff and consultancy resources, reduced certification costs, and quicker implementation compared to traditional methods.

The seminar will take place on 4 February at NCVO, Kings Cross, London. To book your place or for more information telephone 020 7841 5153 or email businesssupportlondon@globalactionplan.org.uk

Managing freight effectively

London's economy relies on the freight sector. However, despite its importance, freight transport also has less positive effects on London. Vans and lorries add to congestion which, in turn, increases CO2 and impacts on the environment. Delivery and Service Plans (DSPs) provide a framework to better manage all types of freight vehicle movement to and from individual buildings. A DSP will improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of deliveries. It will identify unnecessary journeys, and deliveries that could be made by more sustainable modes of transport, to help reduce congestion and minimise the environmental impact of freight activity.
