Eating your greens: Responsible food procurement

On 8 March 2010 over 90 delegates from organisations throughout London joined us to find out more about responsible food procurement. Cyril Jobard of the Mayor of London’s Green Procurement Code started things off with an introduction to sustainable food. He was followed by Tara Garnett of the Food Climate Research Network who outlined the food chain’s contribution to greenhouse gases.

Delegates then had the opportunity to attend workshops on Responsible supply chain management (Joanna Daniels, Business in the Community), Identifying sustainable food (Charlotte Jarman & Rosie Blackburn, Sustain) and Packaging & waste (Hara Xirou & Majken Moller, Mayor of London’s Green Procurement Code).

Rowen West-Henzell from Compassion in World Farming looked at animal welfare issues before Phil Roker of catering company Vacherin outlined his organisation’s approach to sustainability. Caroline Bennett, owner of Moshi Moshi finished things off with a presentation on sustainable seafood. Presentations from the event are available for download on our website.

Sustainable Restaurant Association

Currently the hotel and restaurant sector has the lowest levels of environmental awareness of all business sectors. The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) hopes to change that. The SRA, launched this month, aims to bring together restaurants and diners to make UK restaurants global leaders in sustainability.

The SRA wants to make it easier for restaurants to take positive sustainable actions, to change not only the food that people eat and enjoy, but also the way it is sourced, transported and created. Through practical sustainable advice and guidance, the SRA hopes to demonstrate how restaurants can save money, motivate employees and most importantly, bring in new customers and grow their business.

Sustainable Events Summit

The Mayor of London’s Green Procurement Code team will be exhibiting at this year’s Sustainable Events Summit on April 19 at One Wimpole Street, London. The focus for the day is on extending knowledge from the basics of sustainable events to the more in depth. Expert speakers and panels will deal with a broad range of issues such as transport, energy, waste, procurement, BS8901 and social responsibility.

Social media will play an important role in the Summit, with delegates invited to join the LinkedIn group to submit questions in advance, follow news on Twitter - @SES_London - and suggest content to be covered in the sessions.

UK Government tightens Timber Procurement Policy

From 1 April 2010 new social criteria will be added to the UK Government’s timber procurement policy, to add to the existing requirement that all Government bought timber is legal and sustainable. Central Government is estimated to purchase 20% of all timber bought in the UK. This figure rises to 40% when local authorities and other government bodies are included.

The social criteria that will now be included in the UK Government’s procurement policy are:
  • Identification, documentation and respect of legal, customary and traditional tenure and use rights related to the forest;
  • Mechanisms for resolving grievances and disputes, including those relating to tenure and use rights, to forest management practices and to work conditions; and
  • Safeguarding the basic labour rights and health and safety of forest workers.

City Hall goes green

City Hall - home of the Greater London Authority - is joining the capital’s greener buildings after being awarded Carbon Trust status. The converted status is only awarded to buildings able to show an accurately measured carbon footprint, effective carbon management systems and demonstrable work on reducing energy consumption year on year.

The landmark building, designed by leading architect Sir Norman Foster, was opened in July 2002 and was designed to maximise energy efficiency. Recent improvements including improved recycling, ongoing smart meter installation and voltage optimisation technology have further cut the building’s carbon footprint.

Sustainable City Awards

The Sustainable City Awards recognise and reward UK organisations, from multinational businesses to small charities, and promote outstanding achievements and innovation across all aspects of sustainability. This year’s ceremony took place on 18 February 2010 at Mansion House, the official residence of the City of London’s Lord Mayor.

Café Direct won the sustainable procurement award while Green Tomato Cars, the UK’s largest eco-friendly taxi service and a Green Procurement Code signatory was named the overall winner on the night and presented with the Sustainable City Awards Trophy. The 12 category winners were chosen by a judging panel consisting of environmental and sustainable experts, including Green Procurement Code Programme Manager, Graham Randles.
