It's that
time of year again when we ask signatories to submit
data on green products and services purchased over the
last financial year. The information you supply will be
used to measure your environmental performance and your
organisation may be awarded bronze, silver or gold
status in the Mayor of London's Green Procurement
Code.
The data collection also helps to show how
London organisations play an important role in reducing
environmental impacts through their purchasing power,
and helps us to measure the success of the Green
Procurement Code. We are confident that with your help
we can exceed last year's results and capture even
greater achievements this year.
The information
you provide will be used to determine the winners of the
2009 Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code Awards,
which will be announced at a ceremony in the
autumn.
Data collection takes place from now
until the end of May 2009, using the updated online
progress review tool: www.greenprocurementcodereview.co.uk. All
information submitted in the progress review is
confidential and must be relevant to procedures and
purchases made between 1 April 2008 and 31 March
2009.
Important: In order to
encourage continual improvement, we have updated the
criteria for achieving bronze, silver and gold in the
Green Procurement Code

progress review and details of the new
criteria. |

On 10 March
2009 we hosted our Olympics Exchange event at the Museum
of London in Docklands. Over 120 delegates from
organisations throughout London joined us to find out
how their business could benefit from the 2012 Olympic
Games.
Delegates heard from David Goatman
(Olympic Legacy Directorate, LDA) on the legacy of the
Games, and Shaun McCarthy (Commission for a Sustainable
London 2012) on the role of the Commission. Mike Mulvey
(London Business Network) gave practical advice on using
the CompeteFor website, while Jason Choy told delegates
how his company, Welcome Gate, won a contract to provide
a visitor management system to the Olympic site in
Stratford.
The presentations were followed by a
lively Q&A session, before delegates had the chance
to network with exhibitors, and sample the
London-themed, locally sourced canapés. Among the
exhibitors handing out advice were the Green Procurement
Code team, LRS, South East Enterprise, East London
Business Place, Supply London, London Business Network,
London Borough of Newham, and Centre for Environment and
Safety Management for Business. Click here to download the event

A
recent ENDS report has discovered that only 7.5% of UK
Local Authorities have a timber procurement policy in
place. Developing and implementing a timber purchasing
policy is a practical and effective way of tackling the
challenges of illegal logging, deforestation and climate
change, and helps organisations meet sustainability
objectives. The Central Point of Expertise on Timber
Procurement (CPET) is offering free assistance to Local
Authorities in developing and implementing a sustainable
timber procurement policy. Click here for more information.

Local
authorities and businesses need to go further than
reusing, reducing and recycling their products and
“rethink” if they need to buy products in the first
place, according to Green Procurement Code manager
Graham Randles. Graham told MRW magazine that “Most of
what we waste is what we buy in the first place. We need
to be thinking about what we are buying and looking to
reduce waste at source.” Click here to read the full article.

300 fashion companies have signed up to a code that aims
to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion
industry. The Sustainable Clothing Roadmap seeks to
tackle some of the issues associated with 'throw away
fashion'. Organisations involved in the project will not
be tied to a single set of actions but all will make
changes that will lead to social or environmental
improvements. Key areas to be looked at include
traceability in the supply chain, using more sustainable
fibres and other materials, reducing waste and
increasing recycling. Click here to read the full
