Green Procurement Code signatories go for gold

Congratulations to signatories who took part in this year's progress review. We had an excellent response this year; 186 signatories entered data and 67 of these went on to achieve gold, silver or bronze accreditation. We have seen a significant increase in the number of organisations achieving the higher levels with 16 achieving gold, 28 getting silver and 23 reaching bronze. This improvement indicates that sustainable procurement is now a higher priority for many companies in London. London Remade is delighted to be one of the companies who reached the gold standard.

Becoming a green supplier

On 14 September 2009 over 100 delegates from organisations throughout London joined us to find out more about becoming a green supplier. Delegates heard from Graham Randles (Programme Manager, Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code) on the role of the supply chain in sustainable procurement. Case studies from Andrew MacAskill (Skanska), David Wathey (NHS PASA) and Mike Robson (London Borough of Hackney) looked at green suppliers from the procurer's point of view. Debbie Hitchen (LRS) ended proceedings by looking at bidding for contracts from an SME’s perspective. The presentations are available for download on our website

The event took place at America Square Conference Centre, part of Cavendish Conference Venues. Cavendish Conference Venues has a commitment to sustainability; the company is Greenmark accredited, holds the Green Tourism for London silver award and was awarded the ‘Responsible Venues of the Year Award’ in the MeetingsNews Internet Meetings Marketing Awards.

New Green Procurement Code website goes live

August saw the launch of the new, re-vamped Green Procurement Code website. The new site still has all the useful information and tools to help you implement green purchasing, but with a fresher look and easier to navigate format. There are also some new sections, including a ‘Publications and reports’ page, and an ‘External resources’ section, which links to other useful websites.

Our next task is to refresh the members only toolkit, specifically in relation to how it is used by SMEs. As you are the ones who use the toolkit we would really like to hear your ideas on how it should look and what it should contain. We are hoping to hold a couple of focus groups in the near future to discuss the work in further detail. If you would be interested in taking part in a focus group, or would just like to make some suggestions please email jodi@londonremade.com.

LR network meeting

The count down to the Copenhagen Climate Summit (COP15) has begun. Two months before this crucial conference, London Remade will bring together speakers from both private and public sectors to discuss whether meeting our carbon commitments is an administrative and financial burden or opportunity for change. Join speakers from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, John Laing, LRS and Office Depot to find out more about the impacts and opportunities of climate change for both business and local government. To find out more about this event visit the London Remade website.

New British Standard for sustainable procurement

The British Standard BS 8903 Principles and Framework for Procuring Sustainably, due for publication in summer 2010, will enable organisations and individuals to consider and implement sustainable practices within their procurement processes and ongoing management of their supply chains. Sustainable procurement means only purchasing goods that are really necessary and buying items whose production, use and disposal minimise negative impacts on the environment and society. This standard can be used by individuals and small, medium or large organisations responsible for procuring any form of goods, work or services across all sectors. Click here for more information on the British Standards Institute.

Green Procurement Code Programme Manager, Graham Randles sits on the committee and drafting panel for the BS 8903 and would welcome any comments or suggestions for inclusion. Click here to email Graham.

Eco-makeover for Wembley police station

Wembley police station has become the first building to get an eco-makeover from the Mayor of London's scheme to make public buildings greener and save taxpayers' money on fuel bills. The police station is the first of 42 buildings in the Greater London Authority Group set to get an energy efficiency upgrade, which offers guaranteed levels of energy savings over a period of years. The buildings involved in the programme are used by the Metropolitan Police Authority, Transport for London and the London Fire Brigade and include operational fire and police stations, head offices and listed buildings. The aim is to cut climate change emissions by 25 per cent.

Government saves millions by making computers greener

The Government has saved at least £7 million over the past year by making its IT systems greener. Changes including extending the life of PCs, making double-sided printing the default option and making sure computers are turned off at night have helped cut the carbon footprint of central Government computers by 12,000 tonnes – the same as taking 5,000 cars off the road. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is responsible for up to 20 per cent of carbon emissions generated by Government offices. Each year it generates around 460,000 tonnes a year, the same amount created by a jumbo jet flying around the world more than a thousand times.
